Custom, Down to the Inch: Why Rutledge Atelier is Every Designer’s Best-Kept Secret
More often than not, a project comes along that reminds you why craftsmanship matters.
A designer recently came to us with a very specific request: Can we have the 84” Bamboo Double Sink Vanity from Rail & Stile, but slightly different? The design was perfect in theory, but in practice? Not quite. The client needed drawers in the middle and on each side, and the vanity’s depth had to be reduced from 12” to 10” to fit seamlessly into the space.
In the world of mass-produced furnishings, that kind of request would typically end in compromise. Close enough would have to be good enough. But not here.
Rail & Stile, a Raleigh-based furniture atelier, approaches each piece like a collaboration. Using detailed CAD drawings, we worked with the designer to re-engineer the vanity so that it delivered on both function and form—without sacrificing beauty. The result was not just a piece of furniture, but a tailored solution that felt inevitable in the room.
That’s the power of true customization. It’s not just about altering a measurement—it’s about honoring the designer’s vision and the client’s needs, right down to the last inch.
At Rutledge Atelier, we’re proud to partner with makers like Rail & Stile who understand that details are everything. From heirloom-inspired furniture to sculptural lighting, our role is to connect designers with artisans who can make extraordinary possible—without the bottlenecks of traditional sourcing.
Because at the end of the day, thoughtful luxury isn’t about “almost right.” It’s about creating pieces that fit perfectly—in the home, and into the story of a client’s life.
